Throwback Thursday: Jared's First Day of School

Warning: You May Need Tissues!

My best friend went with me to pick up Jared on his very first day of school.  He gets out to the car and I ask him if the had a good day and he said yes and that he had made me something. Well, what he made follows, and as you imagine after reading it, my best and I were in tears.  I still tear up when I read this poem. I am not going to say anymore, I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves.

The whole picture, with his hand, name, and date.

Close up of the poem, so you can read it.
If you can't read it here is the poem (if I can type it without crying)

On my first day of kindergarten, you lead me by my hand.
You shed some tears as you let go of my hand and waved good-bye.
Did you consider at the time what my hand would do one day?
One day my hand will learn to write magical stories of far away places.
One day my hand may play an instrument, hold a pom-pom, and catch a ball.
One day my hand will crank a car as you stand nervously as I pull out of the drive.

One day my hand will hold a diploma as I walk across a stage.
One day my hand may open the door to a university as I go to learn more.
One day my hand may hold another's as I place a ring upon my love's finger and say, "I do."

One day my hand may hold my love's hand as my baby is born.
One day my hand may hold your grandchild's hand as I take my child school for the first time.

And mom and dad, one day my hand will hold you hand when you need me to.
So, hang up  my picture of my hand, because one day
My hand will hold the keys to a heart, happiness, and to the world.
Thank you for taking me by the hand and leading me in the right direction.

I love you.

No, I was not successfully in typing this without getting goose bumps and crying!

  1. Thanks for the good cry!!! I have a 17 year old son and a 12 year old son. Sometimes you need a throwback to remember the innocence.

  2. LOVE this poem - we have our little Kindergartner's do this at the end of the year or Christmas and it is a huge it!

PS, LOVE your name and spelling - that's probably why I named my first-born Tabitha Rae.
